Even More Dinosaurs & Halloween Fun!

Posted on October 23, 2020

Last week I presented the materials for making 2 New Large Wizard Staffs.  After cleaning-up the branches, it was clear there was enough to make a 3rd smaller staff.  I have a supply of root bases from smaller Pride of Madera to provide a perfect top.  A saw and measuring tape assisted with matching the branches with the right size top.  The drill with a 3/16 inch bit made starter holes.  The screw dowels 5/16 inch by 3 inches for the 2 Larger Staffs and ¼ inch by 2 inches for the smaller one provides the connection.  A vice grip made it easy insert one end.  Setting the top on the other end and turning by hand finished the job.

The Large Staffs are for Raphael the Raptor and David the T-Rex.  I tied the Staff to the Dinosaurs arms using a rope and pipe insulation around the branches to protect their paint.  Museum Wax rolled into balls then shaped to the staffs allow for attaching the mini candle lights for evening display.  The smaller staff is for Antonio the Pterosaur.  Remember in post Oct. 10, 2020 “More Dinosaurs and Halloween” three staffs were made to provide one “Just Right” for Max (Maximillian) the T-Rex.  The other two were “Just Right” for T-Rexes, Alejandro & Kevin.

This Dino-Lantern is Hadrosaurs hatching from eggs.  The inspiration for this Dinosaur Pumpkin came from the Stamp designed by James Gurney in 1997.  See post Oct. 17, 2020 “Dinosaurs – Wizards & Stamps!” for more details.  This time I used a pencil to make a deep impression of the design before using the carving tools. I discovered that after removing the insides of the pumpkin, placing it in the refrigerator allows more time, even days before carving out your design.  You need to decide which parts to cut all the way through and which parts to remove the orange but not cut too deep into the pumpkin flesh.  This will allow various levels of light to accent your design at night.  I used Sharpies to add color for day time viewing.
